Stanford University’s acceptance rate ranges between 3.6% and 3.9%. But do you know how universities calculate the acceptance rate? It is arrived at by dividing the number of accepted students by the total number of applications, further multiplied by 100. It is also known as an admission rate or admit rate and is expressed in percentages.
Let’s understand how the acceptance rate is calculated using an example. Let’s say 200 applicants applied for a particular course at a university, and 50 are accepted. Then, the acceptance rate is calculated as:
Accepted students/total number of applicants*100
Therefore, it is 50/200*100 = 25%

Please remember a low acceptance rate means that the university has a rigorous selection process and receives thousands of applications for limited seats. On the other hand, a high acceptance rate implies that a university receives numerous applications for several seats, making it easier for students to secure a spot. Looking at Stanford University’s acceptance rate, it is pretty clear that it follows a stringent process to ensure that deserving candidates are selected. A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.9 or above is necessary for Stanford University. In the USA, Harvard University has an acceptance rate lower than Stanford.
Some US universities focus on making quality education accessible for international students. Therefore, some universities have acceptance rates ranging between 50% -75%, making it easier for international students to get admission.
