If you are interested in studying in the UK, you need to fulfil certain requirements before applying for the visa. For instance, you need to meet specific English language certification requirements when you apply for a study visa to pursue a course from a UK university and college. This certification is the Secure English Language Test or SELT. It is one of the most popular tests taken for the UK visa and immigration (UKVI) to demonstrate your English language skills. It will assess your English reading, speaking, writing and listening abilities. The test score is recognised by over 120 colleges and universities in the UK.
Who can give SELT language test?
International students who want to pursue study programs from UK
universities need to appear for the SELT exam. There are two UK visa application types
- Student visa - below degree level and Student visa - degree level and above.
So, depending on your course and the visa required, you need to apply for the appropriate SELT
exam.
The SELT is also mandatory for international applicants who:
Different Types of SELT
The Graded Examinations in Spoken English is a test to assess the communication, speaking and listening skills in the English language for use in real-life situations. It is a face-to-face assessment test. Anyone above 5 years of age who wants to move to the UK to work, study, or settle down, needs to clear it.
ISE is a test which measures your ability to communicate in the English language. It evaluates your reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. This 4-skills qualification test is necessary to clear if you wish to teach at a university, college or school in the UK post completion of your course.
SELT exam structure
Candidates can either take a four-skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) or a two-skills (Speaking & Listening) exam. The two factors: the type of visa and the purpose of visiting the UK, will help you determine the SELT exam type.
