We have witnessed a paradigm shift in the education space due to COVID-19. Universities around the world adopted the hybrid learning model and embraced the new way of learning. The admission process is continuously evolving to adapt to the new normal. So, here’s how the admission pattern and process in higher educational institutions have changed.
For study abroad students
Since international borders have opened up, international students have gained consumer power. Many universities have extended several benefits to attract students from all over the world.
English proficiency tests are mandatory in most study abroad destinations. Due to COVID, universities have not only moved the process online but have also expanded the range of English proficiency tests for the admission process like IELTS indicator, PTE, TOEFL IBT (Home edition), Duolingo, etc.
Many universities are offering discounts on the application process to encourage students. Also, some international varsities have either waived off some of the entrance exams like ACT or SAT or have made it optional. With many universities easing the entrance exams, the focus will now shift to the presentation of the profile. So, create an impressive Statement of Purpose (SOP) to compliment your profile.
Many international educational institutions have developed an innovative way to let the students get a peek into the campus, libraries, coursework and so on by introducing a virtual tour of the university. You can even participate in the interactive sessions and clear your doubts. It will also guide you through the application process, multiple courses available and more.
Ideally, application processes begin a year in advance and go on till all the spots of the respective universities are filled in. However, application deadlines are extended so that more study abroad students can apply. Also, universities have considered cases of those students who could not submit the mark sheets owing to the delayed exams in their respective countries. This has encouraged more students to apply for international universities than deferring their study abroad plans.
For students studying in India
While the admission process will vary depending on the university, here are some developments that universities follow in India. To get admission in central universities for any undergraduate and post-graduate program, you are required to take Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CU-CET). Last month this entrance exam was waived off in view of the pandemic. However, this test will now be conducted online by National Testing Agency (NTA). The online application process will continue between 16th August and 1st September.
University Grants Commission of India (UGC) requires higher educational institutions in India to complete the admission process before 30th September. The admission process for undergraduate programs will begin once the results of CBSE, ICSE and all other State Boards are out. Some universities are allowing provisional admissions based on online entrance exams scores. Some varsities are using an AI-enabled service that lets faculty conduct a personal interview after screening online applications.
So, universities have extended full support to the student community to empower them to fulfil their academic aspiration without deferring their plans.
