How is the overall IELTS score calculated?
As per the Figure no. 1, the scores will be allotted to each section based on the student’s performance in the exam. The overall score is the average of the individual score of each section, comprising Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Let’s understand this better with the help of this example:
Explanation: So, the total of the band scores will be: 8 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 29
The average score will be: 29/4 = 7.25
Also, scores ending with 0.25 will be rounded to the next half band, and scores ending with 0.75 will be rounded to the next whole band. For instance, if the score is 6.25, the overall score will be 6.5; if the score is 6.75, the overall score is 7.00. So, the overall band score in the above example, where the average score is 7.25, will be rounded off to 7.5.
In the reading section, you will have to answer 40 questions. Based on your performance, you will be allotted band scores, which are as follows:
